Frank Wynne's translation from the Spanish of Mafalda will bring readers into the life and mind of a six-year-old girl investigating the political wreckage all around her. Rabble rouser, chess enthusiast, passionate advocate for peace and the abolition of soup, Mafalda made her debut in early 1960s Argentina. In the next years she went world-wide, as Quino's comic was translated into language after language. Mafalda became a symbol of curiosity, democracy, and free thinking. She was beloved by literary greats: Julio Cortázar, Gabriel García Márquez, Umberto Eco, Mario Vargas Llosa, and Isabel Allende have all praised her. Álvaro Enrigue and Rivka Galchen will discuss Mafalda and we will celebrate her arrival in English. Elsewhere Editions, the picture book imprint of Archipelago Books, will publish Mafalda on June 10th, 2025.
Álvaro Enrigue is a Mexican writer living in NY. His You Dream of Empires, translated by Natasha Wimmer, was a top ten book of the year for The New York Times, The Guardian, and the New York Public Library. He teaches Early Modern and Latin American Literatures at Hofstra University
