Touching on their most recent works, the power of creative writing in times of crisis, as well as their vision for fiction and other genres in the perilous decades to come, this discussion with three of the most exciting novelists writing today promises to be wide-ranging and provocative. This episode will be available online after the event and is a celebration of Burned by Books' 150th episode.

Jennifer Egan is the author of several novels and a short story collection. Her 2017 novel Manhattan Beach, a New York Times bestseller, was awarded the Andrew Carnegie Medal for Excellence in Fiction and was chosen as New York City’s One Book One New York read. Her novel A Visit From the Goon Squad won the 2011 Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Critics Circle Award, and was recently named one of the best books of the decade by Time Magazine and Entertainment Weekly and one of the best books of the 21st century by the New York Times Book Review. Her new novel, The Candy House, a companion to A Visit From the Goon Squad, was named one of the New York Times’s 10 Best Books of 2022 and one of President Obama’s favorite reads of the year.
Tess Gunty is the author of the New York Times bestselling novel The Rabbit Hutch, which received the National Book Award for Fiction, among other awards. Named a best book of the year by the New York Times, the New Yorker, TIME, NPR, and others, the novel has been translated into twelve languages. She is currently a Writer in Residence at New York University, where she teaches creative writing. Her second novel, Honeydew, is forthcoming from Knopf.
Katie Kitamura’s most recent novel is Intimacies. One of the New York Times’ 10 Best Books of 2021, it was longlisted for the National Book Award, the PEN/Faulkner Award and was a finalist for the Joyce Carol Oates Prize. It was also one of Barack Obama’s favorite books of 2021. In France, it won the Prix Litteraire Lucien Barriere, was a finalist for the Grand Prix de l’Heroine, and was nominated for the Prix Fragonard. Her previous novel, A Separation, was a finalist for the Premio von Rezzori and a New York Times Notable Book. Her work has been translated into over 20 languages and is being adapted for film and television. She is a recipient of the Rome Prize in Literature as well as fellowships from the Lannan, Jan Michalski and Santa Maddalena Foundations. She teaches in the creative writing program at New York University. Her new novel, Audition, will be published by Riverhead Books in 2025.
Chris Holmes is Chair of English and Associate Professor at Ithaca College. He writes essays on contemporary literature. His book, Kazuo Ishiguro Against World Literature, will be published in November with Bloomsbury. He is the co-director of The New Voices Festival, a celebration of work in poetry, prose, and playwriting by up-and-coming young writers.
